Workshop 1, 10:00 – 13:00: 🌟Golden Era Workshop – 3 hours; 1 hour lecture; 2 hours dance🌟
Classical Oriental Dance was born in the first half of the 20th century on large stages in Cairo. Oriental dancers were stars in movies, their faces were dazzling from every newspapers, and their names were the best-selling fashion brands. Who would not know Samia Gamal, right? The dance of these enchanting dancers was charming, feminine, and although their style differs from modern oriental dance, we can still learn a lot. The first part of the workshop is a lecture – introduction to golden era bellydance from several views – movies, cabarets (saalas) and weddings in Cairo through 1900 to 1960s. During the dance part of the workshop, we will explore the beautiful and typical bellydance movements of bellydancers in 1940-50’s, we will look at some important features, figures and steps, and we will finalize the topic by a choreography inspired by Golden Era bellydance.
13:00 – 13:45
Workshop 2, 13:45 – 15:45: 🌟Taqsim baladi🌟
Baladi is a huge topic and it extends in many directions. It has different forms and a broad evolution. In this workshop, we will focus on taqsim baladi. We will learn about the structure of the song, look at taqsim baladi from historical and cultural view, and learn how to dance to taqsim baladi. We will explore the awwady taqsim, capture the melody in our hips and arms, learn how to embody the curvy and enchanting melody of accordion, how to react to darbuka’s accents and beats and how to become a Bint el Balad.
Approximate start 18:00. Featuring performances from workshop participants and our guest, Badriyah! All welcome!
